Sunday was my first sewing class... ever. I felt like I was sitting in a classroom, and no one spoke english. Selvage, Bias, Lengthwise Grain, Crosswise Grain, Grainlines, Press Cloth, Bobbins, and Feed Dogs.......... I told you it was a different language! Before yesterday, I had no clue what these words meant, and still today it's a bit hazy.
I was one of the few in attendance that had never touched a sewing machine before, and I was most definitely the youngest gal in the class. We introduced ourselves, partnered up, then measured each other to figure out what size we are. One thing I learned so far: You are NOT the clothing size you are used to. Let's say you are a size 2 at H&M... In the sewing slash pattern world, you are now an 8. Who knew?
We then browsed through patterns, found one that we liked, and chose our final project. Mine? A yellow, sleeveless, sundress with 8 buttons, that I will later have to showcase at the last class.
Below are the supplies I had to purchase for Sewing 101. I recommend signing up for coupons.... patterns typically go on sale over the weekend at JoAnne Fabrics, and these coupons can get you an extra 40 to 60% off!
[My Kenmore Sewing Machine with pedal; Singer's sewing & storage kit; Yellow fabric for sundress]
[Singer Sew Essentials Storage System - $33.00 @ JoAnne Fabrics]
[My new best friend / Kenmore sewing machine + yellow, cotton fabric]
[McCall's pattern, but making a slight variation to this version - no sleeves!]
For the classes to follow, we immediately start to cut, stitch and sew our final projects. They say the best way to learn is to do it, and I believe my teacher is going with that strategy.
Once I am an expert seamstress, I will be as cool as this lady, but with much better hair:
